Modern and Jazz Programs

South Jersey Ballet School understands the importance of being a well-rounded dancer.  That is why we encourage our students to be involved in our modern and jazz programs, in addition to our classical ballet program.  The instructors here at South Jersey Ballet School have a great deal of training in modern and jazz techniques and feel that it is important to learn these styles of dance in order to be a part of today’s dance world.

Modern dance, an early 20th century dance form, emerged as a means to be more expressive through movement.  This dance technique allows the dancer to show a lot of emotion on stage, perform in more contemporary pieces of choreography, and develop improvisational skills.

It has been said that jazz dance has continued to develop parallel to popular music.  While jazz dance continues to evolve with the most current music, our teachers here at South Jersey Ballet School tend to emphasize the more classic jazz techniques.   Most recently, our jazz classes have performed dances from the popular Broadway hits, All That Jazz (Chicago), Can’t Stop the Beat (Hairspray), My Strongest Suit (Aida), We Go Together (Grease), and Popular (Wicked).

We strongly encourage even our youngest students to get involved in our modern and jazz program.  They will have the opportunity to learn new dance skills all year long and will be invited to perform in a modern and/or jazz dance in our annual June recital.   Modern and jazz classes will prepare the more serious dancer for college auditions and for working with professional dance companies.  Don’t pass up a great opportunity to expand your knowledge of dance and explore these dance techniques.
